Beschrijving

Disciplinerende macht
is een term, voornamelijk van Michel Foucault, die verwijst naar subtiele machtsvormen die individuen normaliseren en controleren via instituten (scholen, ziekenhuizen, kazernes) door middel van toezicht, kennis en het disciplineren van lichaam en gedrag, waardoor normen worden geïnternaliseerd en mensen zichzelf controleren. Deze macht is niet gebaseerd op fysieke dwang maar op 'slimme' technologieën zoals hiërarchische blikken, normaliserende sancties (op tijd komen, prestatie), en het examen, dat individuen zichtbaar maakt, classificeert en 'subjectificeert'. 
Kenmerken van disciplinerende macht: 
  • Instituties: School, gevangenis, ziekenhuis, fabriek; plaatsen waar mensen worden gekneed tot 'subjecten'.
  • Methoden:
    • Hiërarchische blik: Constante (potentiële) observatie, zoals cameratoezicht of de inspectie.
    • Normaliserende sancties: Belonen of bestraffen van afwijkingen van de norm (te laat, ongehoorzaam, onzindelijk).
    • Examen: Een middel om individuen te meten, te vergelijken, te differentiëren en te bestraffen, waardoor ze 'gevallen' worden.
  • Doel: Vorming van 'nuttige' en 'gehoorzame' individuen, het maximaliseren van hun krachten en tijd. 
Hoe het werkt: 
  • Macht is niet alleen 'verboden', maar ook productief: het creëert kennis en subjectiviteit.
  • Mensen internaliseren de normen en gaan zichzelf disciplineren, zelfs zonder directe dwang, zoals in het idee van het Panopticon (een gevangenisontwerp met een centrale toren).
  • Zelfs verzet of activisme kan onderdeel worden van het systeem, omdat het de machtsstructuren bevestigt en data genereert. 
Voorbeelden: 
  • Een leraar die een leerling beoordeelt en een cijfer geeft.
  • Een werkgever die de productiviteit van werknemers monitort.
  • De surveillance door apps en dataverzameling tijdens de COVID-pandemie.
